Making Laundromat Time Your Down Time

Doing your laundry is a way to carve out a bit of time to allow you to relax, recharge or give full concentration to a task or activity that isn’t receiving the time it needs.  A trip to the local laundromat can kill more than two birds with one stone.

If you let your laundry build up to a point where you can cart it all off to the laundromat and tackle it all in one go, you can not only save time, but you can also save money.

With the high speed, high capacity and high-temperature commercial machines found at a laundromat you can easily tackle a full week’s worth of laundry in less than two hours.  If your load is unusually large and the laundromat is quiet, you can use multiple machines to do everything all at once. You don’t really have this option when doing laundry at home.

Catch up on your reading, spend some time on social media, do some knitting or take the time to pay your bills for the month.  However, you use the time in the laundromat is up to you and you only.

Lavandería Romeral (Spain)

The laundry that enables professionalization of the entire laundry sector

The industry takes care of their working conditions, their training and the conciliation with their family life. All this directly affects the quality of work they realise.

At Lavandería Romeral they practise social responsibility, which means that people are not only seen as consumers or workers, but as “complete persons” with “human spirit”, who want the world to be best. Therefore, the compensations, benefits and training of their employees are greater than those of the competition. The quality of the management and processes is guaranteed by focusing on firstly solving the problems of their customers. With regard to service, they work with the laboratory ITEL specialised (Spanish Technical Cleaning Institute), who focuses on giving the solution to the problems of their clients. ITEL performs the inspections and total identification of the textiles of the laundry clients via the RFID system, which makes traceability possible. In this way, the laundry is able to give their clients all the information necessary for the sake of a higher quality of their services.

Products and Sustainability

For Lavandería Romeral, commitment to the environment is a core value. This manifests itself in ecological processes and products in addition to renewable energy. Sustainability is another value of the company. For this reason, they work to be an eco-friendly company and they want to be a sector leader on the island.

The rates of replacement are limited to the minimum by integrating analysis, organisation and planning in all processes (washing and drying) and finishes (ironing, folding and packaging) through technologies of last generation. This guarantees efficient solutions, no accumulations, an optimalisation of the production and low costs per kg of laundry washed. Finally, they have installed a photovoltaic plant, a solar power system with solar panels, each comprising a number of solar cells, designed for the supply of solar power by means of the conversion of light, for self-consumption of green energy.

In terms of recovery & recycling the laundry takes care of an optimal recycling of waste. The specific location also has the greatest potential for industrial and commercial development in Gran Canaria. Furthermore, the Municipality of Qauimes manages and takes charge of the collection of waste with several pickup days a week:

They also link their services to the Hospitality industry (governors, cooks, etc.), and use the Local Written Press.

WOPCOM Blog: Beware of Old Curtains with a Stiffened Buckram Header, by Ken Cupitt

In this case the curtains were made up by a local seamstress so there was no care label. The curtains were dry cleaned in perchloroethylene on a standard process which resulted in the brown staining across the top of the curtains; most of the colour transfer was on the lining but also to a lesser degree on the curtain material which was white.

The colour staining was as a result of the stiffening agent breaking down into dust within the fabric making up the Buckram and literally dying the fabric. Subsequent treatment and re-cleaning failed to remove the colour and led to the dry cleaner facing an expensive claim.

As there was no care label it was judged that because the dry cleaner chose to dry clean the curtains without consulting the customer the dry cleaner would be held responsible for the damage.

In cases where there is no care label it is always advisable to discuss the potential problems with the customer, in this case the curtains were old resulting in the stiffener used on the Buckram to deteriorate from prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Dry cleaners should be aware that if they make a decision on how to process an item or garment which does not carry a care label, they will be liable for any adverse damage that may occur as they are deemed to be the expert.

We have a Technical Bulletin with advice on Curtain Cleaning Care which may help as we are going into the season for customers requiring this service.

Adidas by Stella McCartney – NuCycl Technology creates new clothes out of trash

Before becoming a hoodie, the material in a new ‘Adidas by Stella McCartney’ top might have had a previous life as part of a T-shirt or a pair of jeans. The limited-edition sweatshirt is the first commercially produced garment to use new technology that purifies and liquifies old cotton to transform it into new material.

According to Stacy Flynn, cofounder and CEO of Evrnu, the company that developed the technology called NuCycl, it essentially turns old clothing into new, high-quality raw materials for the creation of new clothes. “Our goal is to convert garment waste into new fiber, so that we eliminate the context of waste in the supply chain. We’re breaking these materials down to their polymer form and building them back up.” Garment waste is turned into a pulp, liquified, and then pushed out of a 3D-printer-like extruder to form new yarn.

Solvetex VII – New Benchmark study on quality performance solvents – Now available on WOPCOM

The Solvetex projects are executed by TKT on behalf of CINET. They provide an independent overview of the cleaning performance for professional textile cleaning processes. The previous projects evaluated currently established solvents and professional wet cleaning systems under practical conditions. Recently various new solvents have entered the market, changing the global spectrum of cleaning technology. The next Solvetex VII study reviews independent evaluation reports and conditions to present an overview of the cleaning performances and technologies for these new professional textile cleaning processes. This will include Higlow (Christeyns), Intense (Seitz), Ky (Kreussler) and Sensene (Safechem).

To provide an up-to-date benchmark, these solvents were evaluated at a testing location by TKT to determine the cleaning performance according to the Solvetex procedure. This will enable updating of the Solvetex benchmark study with the current state of the art cleaning technologies. The results of this set of measurements are compared with those for PERC and HCS as measured in the Solvetex 1 project. The testing conditions in the project Solvetex 1 were however not identical, as these tests were conducted at dry cleaners with their standard process and their normal cleaning load and not at a testing location.

General test set-up

Quality aspects of solvent cleaning like stain removal, greying and dimensional change were assessed. A textile package was used to judge visual appearance and assess dimensional change. Test swatches were used to measure stain removal, dimensional change and greying.

The machine load existed of the textile package, the test swatches and additional textiles normally cleaned by the textile cleaner to meet the required load. Pre and after spotting, finishing or any other special pre- of after-treatment were not included. The process conditions were supplied by the cleaning system suppliers.

The evaluation was based on the following criteria:
• Stain removal (of the model soil on the multi soil monitoring swatches)
• Greying of wool and cotton (on the test swatches)
• Dimensional change of the cleaned garments and wool and cotton test swatches
• Determination of visual appearance of the textile package
