Gore-Tex announces introduction of ePE membrane

The Fabrics Division of W. L. Gore – a  global materials science company focused on fluoropolymer technology and manufacturing – is developing the use of expanded polyethylene (ePE) as a new basic complementary for their membrane technologies. Usage of the new ePE membranes is planned from  the Autumn/Winter 2022 season.

Products containing the ePE membrane will be introduced in various consumer product categories, including general outdoor and lifestyle garments, lifestyle footwear and snow sports gloves from customers such as Adidas and Ziener. The science company states to have applied decades of scientific knowledge and polymer expertise to combining the right materials and processes that manipulate ePE into a strong microporous material. The new membrane combines a high strength-to-weight ratio to create extremely lightweight and thin composites that are still mechanically robust, enabling long-lasting performance and a low environmental footprint.

When combined with polyurethane (PU), a lasting waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane with a low membrane mass will emerge, resulting in a lower carbon footprint. The new membrane is also free of PFCs of Environmental Concern (PFCECs).
