Rick Rome – CEO WashClubTrak (USA)

Rick-Rome

Where did the idea of Wash Club NYC come from?

Back in 2010, our founder Rick Rome acquired one of the largest laundromats in Brooklyn, NY; It quickly became clear the best way to grow that business would be through pick-up and delivery. Local competition for self-service was irrational and store traffic was just not strong enough to make the business viable. We had to figure a way to grow our turns per day (TPDs). Meanwhile, with e-commerce on the rise and online shopping becoming the fast rising form of consumption, we realized the time was ripe to offer laundry home delivery services through web and mobile applications. The consumer reaction was fast and very positive.

What makes WashClubTrak different from other Laundry on Demand technology platforms?

Launched in 2010, WashClubTrak is the pioneer of on-demand laundry delivery. Its 40 licensees boast some 50,000 customers across the US, making us the undisputed leader in the industry. The software platform has seen in excess of 300,000 orders since inception and current generates some $7m in sales for its licensees. We are proud to be “built for operators by operators”, giving us unique insight and knowledge to help industry players in their online expansion.

What are the key success factors (in your view) to make Laundry on Demand work today?

You need the right combination of laundry & dry cleaning expertise, the right technological and marketing platform as well as a reliable delivery infrastructure. Dry cleaners and laundromat operators in the US and Europe have 75% of these attributes. All they need to get started and expand their business in a 30-mile radius is the technological solution to attract online customers and process the order flow. That is exactly what WashClubTrak delivers.

What is your belief for the future of Laundry on Demand? Will this bring youngsters back to the industry again?

We are only at the very beginning of this consumer-driven shift in our industry. Inexistent five years ago, laundry on demand is now a $75-100mn industry in the US. Meanwhile, coin laundry and dry cleaning have stagnated or declined. We expect laundry on demand to remain the main disruptive force for the foreseeable future, both in the US and overseas.

Laundry on Demand will definitely bring in millenials on the customer side. Millenials and generation Z  become the main layers of the workforce. As seen with Amazon and the likes, our economy is increasingly service and consumer oriented; in that sense, home delivery and online shopping will become more and more ubiquitous.

Jack de Montaignac – CCO Laundrapp (UK)

Jack-de-Montaignac

Where did the idea of Laundrapp come from?

Ed Relf (CEO) was walking in London and realised that although many existing services traditionally offered on the high street were now available on demand – that laundry and dry cleaning was not. It was an industry that was screaming for digital revolution.

What makes Laundrapp different from other Laundry on Demand technology platforms?

There are a great many features and developments that we’ve gone through to set us apart but 5 things that really spring to mind are:

  1.  The native app which is not web-based. That means a richer user experience for customers.
  2.  Product selection, descriptions and FAQs within the app. Most apps don’t allow you to select products and it causes friction in customer experience when they (if they can!) amend an order.
  3.  In-app driver tracking like Uber so customers know exactly when the laundry is picked-up and delivered.
  4.  Complete automation – from payments to customer attributions, to managing driver shifts and the ability to integrate via our API into existing laundry systems.
  5.  The Pulse routing algorithm that delivers driver efficiency through geo-clustering of orders. The term ‘driver capacity’ is obsolete for Laundrapp.

What are the key success factors (in your view) to make Laundry on Demand work today?

Customers need to be at the forefront and they want convenience as well as good quality cleaning at the right price. At the other end, companies need to have a commercially viable logistics operation.

What is your belief for the future of Laundry on Demand? Will this bring youngsters back to the industry again?

Laundry on Demand brings millennials (new customers) into the industry, and is changing the habit of existing customers. Different regions also offer entirely new revenue opportunities – take wash and fold service for example (instead of using a washing machine) in the UK.
