Secondhand − Hype or Sustainable?

In a recent podcast of the German fashion business magazine Cécile Wickmann – CCO and co-founder of Rebelle, a second-hand platform for premium and luxury fashion – was interviewed and gave her opinion on investing. According to Wickmann green investments are the future.

She founded the platform in 2013 and the start-up went public on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in February, raising EUR 18.6 million. Rebelle offered products from the world’s most popular luxury fashion brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci and Prada. At the same time, it increased customers awareness of sustainability and circularity within the fashion industry. The company operated websites in English, French, Italian and Dutch which presented over 200,000 items.

The company’s stock market history ended in September, because Lithuanian ‘recommerce’ platform Vinted took over and bought the company for around 29 million euros. Thomas Plantenga – co-founder and CEO of Vinted – stated that his company had been following Rebelle for quite some time and that its achievements in the luxury range had been impressive. He is convinced that by combining Rebelle’s expertise with his company’s geographical reach and broad membership base, great potential for a stronger value proposition is anticipated. As well as an increase in the resale market’s popularity.
