In the last decades, as consumers we have been prioritizing replacement over repair. Once the legal guarantee of a product has expired, consumers have very few incentives to repair the deficient item. In order to change this dynamic, the European Commission adopted a Right to Repair rule. This will make it more cost effective for consumers to repair instead of replacing the item.
THE NEW MEASURES TO PROMOTE REPAIR AND REUSE:
Within the legal guarantee: Sellers will be required to offer repair except when it is more expensive than replacement.
Beyond the legal guarantee:
1️⃣ A right for consumers to claim repair to producers for produces that are technically repairable under EU law
2️⃣ A producers’ obligation to inform consumers about products that they are obliged to repair themselves
3️⃣ An online matchmaking repair platform connecting consumers with repairers and sellers of refurbished goods in their area.
4️⃣ An European Repair Information form bringing transparency to repair conditions and prices to compare repair offers
5️⃣ An European quality standard to ensure the quality of repair services.
So here’s to another promising change in our industry!
Of course, as United Repair Centre, this is such a motivating news. Goes to show that we are on the right path. More consumers are adopting repair habits and now legislations are also adopting this mindset.
