Climate Change … 5 Facts to scare you into ACTION!
We have been talking about climate change for quite some time now! However, when things are getting truly scary, we can just turn off the TV and go on with our lives. But … the threats won’t go away! Here are five scary facts about climate change that should urge us into action to address the threats.
1. Scientists estimate that we are on track to reach the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold by 2030 and reach the “tipping point” for climate change.
2. The last 7 years have been the warmest on record. This has been accompanied by devastating and extreme weather, rising sea levels and melting ice, all powered by record-breaking greenhouse gas levels due to human activities.
3. Extinction is a natural phenomenon. However, experts suggest we’re in the midst of the sixth mass extinction, mostly caused by human activity. However, species diversity is crucial for ecosystem resilience and without it, communities will not have the strength to withstand change.
4. According to an article published in 2024 by the World Health Organization, rising temperatures have increased heat-related deaths, the intensity of natural disasters, such as extreme wildfires worldwide and hurricanes. Climate change is also shifting the seasons. The shifts disrupt the natural interactions between species, their habitats, and their migration patterns.
5. Many leaders still ignore climate change.
Scientists and the public unite to develop an environmental policy, but many global governments ignore it. At the same time, climate literacy is needed to prepare young people with an understanding of the climate crisis and skills to create solutions.
This is the critical decade for climate change. Decisions made now will have an impact on temperature rise and the degree and severity of impacts in the (near) future. We need to change policy and approaches in light of the latest evidence about the state of the climate system. Time is no longer on our side!
