Hotels & digital presence: travellers seek meaning & significance!

In June 2025, Ryan Trahan—YouTube creator, fundraiser, and storytelling wizard—departed for a stay in the most unique Airbnb in all 50 US states in just 50 days. Each stop wasn’t just another place to stay: it was an episode and a chance to connect with something bigger. Viewers didn’t care for the comfort; they followed the trip for the meaning and ended up falling in love with the spaces! A brief summary of his findings:

Hotels have to acknowledge that today’s audience is trained by platforms.  Whether it’s TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram, it’s all about emotional resonance, mission, and a sense of belonging, instead of polished listings and convenience. The problem is that most hotels aren’t giving guests an irresistible reason to stay with them. They’re offering sameness, not significance. And that’s a missed opportunity.

If hotels want to be distinctive in the crowded digital space, they need to be human, mission-driven, and culture-savvy. For instance: stop selling beds, start selling belonging. Tell your audience what you stand for, what will your guests experience that they won’t find anywhere else. Additionally, create a content engine, not just a website. Build a content strategy that goes beyond your booking engine: for instance, with weekly short-form videos of staff or guest moments and blog posts about your neighbourhood, culture, or backstory. Because in 2025, the real focus in travel marketing isn’t inventory. It’s identity.
