In Germany, The Energy Efficiency Act has recently been passed in the Bundestag. However , the German law seems to go well beyond the framework set by the EU in the European Energy Efficiency Directive and harms German medium-sized businesses in competition with other European laundries.
Almost two thirds of German laundries have already introduced an environmental management system according to ISO 14001. The system is sufficient evidence for the EU, but is not being recognized under the German law. Consequently, it means that approximately 80 companies in the laundry industry will have to change their management systems.
German companies have already been investing in energy-saving technology due to skyrocketing energy prices, CO2 emissions from textile service providers have fallen by almost 30 percent over the past ten years.
