Sweden-based VarUnik, which offers textiles with a lower environmental impact to the hotel & restaurant industry, launched a completely circular service aimed at hotels with a high climate focus. The initiative was launched during the latter part of 2022.
Through the new ‘Rethink Textiles’ brand, the company intends to help hotels in their work to offer sustainable accommodation. At the same time, the initiative is aimed at helping the hotel industry reduce its environmental and social footprint from textiles by renting out eco-labelled textiles with a lower environmental impact in a circular system, where no textiles are wasted. The textiles in the subscription service are traceable in order to collect the customers’ unique washing data, through so-called RFID code (Radio Frequency Identification).
Based on the hotel’s own data, customers are offered training on how to avoid unnecessary washing, which extends the life of the textiles and saves both energy and costs. Through RFID tracking, increased transparency is also enabled in the textile value chain. An important piece of the puzzle in the work against child labour, exploitation of staff, and compensation below agreed minimum wages.
