HeiQ AeoniQ is a new man-made cellulose fiber, with properties that would be comparable to those of polyester or polyamide. The material was developed by the Swiss company HeiQ. The fiber can be made from various raw material flows: recycled cotton, but also cellulose from algae or cellulose waste from agriculture. According to HeiQ, if a kg of polyester were to be replaced by a kg of this new fiber, this would mean a CO2 reduction of 5 kg of CO2 per kilogram.
In 2022 a pilot plant will be opened for the material in Herzogenburg in Austria with a limited capacity of 100 kg of yarn per year. Scale-up to a plant with a capacity of 30,000 tons per year (with an investment of 300 million dollars) is planned for the end of 2024.
