Development of the textile fiber market

Despite all the sustainability initiatives, the global textile fiber market will continue to grow. The table below shows the figures for the four most important fiber types for 2015 and 2021 and the forecast for 2025.

Fiber  2015 production in million tons Market share in % 2021 production in million tons Market share in % 20215 production in million tons Market share in %
Polyester 44,67 52,38 55,76 57,57 62,96 56,36
Cotton 24,04 28,57 26,03 25,13 27,01 24,54
“Manmade” cellulose 5,185 4,76 5,409 6,66 8,087 7,27
Polypropylene 4,316 4,76 5,404 5,5 6,051 45,45

The trend that has been visible for decades that the production of cotton is increasing slightly, but that the market share is declining, is therefore continuing. It is striking, however, that in the period from 2021 to 2025 the market share of polyester stabilizes for the first time or even decreases slightly, despite a still significant increase in volume. Also notable is the rapid increase in production and market share of “man-made” cellulose, such as viscose, for example. Polypropylene is mainly used in technical textiles. The proportion of the other fibres, such as polyamide, acrylic and wool, is negligibly small.
