EU strategy for sustainable textiles presented

The European Commission presented a package of European Green Deal proposals on March 30 2022 to make sustainable products the norm in the EU, boost circular business models and empower consumers to make the green transition. As announced in the Circular Economy Action Plan, the Commission is proposing new rules to make almost all physical goods on the EU market more environmentally friendly, circular and energy efficient throughout their lifecycle, from design phase to everyday use and end of life.

On 30 March 2022, the European Commission also presented its new strategy to make textiles more sustainable, repairable, reusable and recyclable, while tackling fast fashion, textile waste and the tackle of destruction of unsold textiles and ensuring that textile production takes place under good social conditions.

Finally, the package includes a proposal for new rules to give consumers more power in the green transition, so that consumers are better informed about the environmental sustainability of products and are better protected against greenwashing.
