Myths and Facts About Used Clothes

To reduce the enormous impact that the global fashion industry has on our environment, it is important to reuse and recycle clothing and textiles. However, the worldwide reuse of clothing and textiles is often critically assessed. This is because there are often incorrect assumptions about the sector that sorts and exports second hand clothing to developing countries.

For example, there is a misconception that the exported second-hand clothing is thrown away abroad. To disprove these assumptions, various interest groups Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART from USA), Textile Recycling Association (UK), EuRIC AISBL Textiles (EU) and Bureau of International Recycling have jointly published a press release. The aforementioned interest groups have developed and supported many initiatives aimed at reusing discarded textiles in the most sustainable way possible. This is expected to grow enormously in the coming years.
