BOX24 (Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia). Unlocking the lockers potential in Southeast Asia
BOX 24’s business model is Hardware-As-A-Service (HAAS), which centers around creating a branded experience using lockers and mobile app as key consumer touch points. The company offers its branded product/services, set its own price, create payment solution, and e-Wallet system, but outsourced the back-end to respective partners e.g. laundry factories, 3rd party logistics providers (3PL’s), and retailers.
An innovative business model
The service concepts can be divided into two channels namely self-service lockers and home delivery service. Box24’s services includes laundry, dry cleaning, household items, bags and shoes cleaning. Customers come to them because of convenience and transparency that cannot be found easily, since the main competitors are traditional laundry shops who open 9 am – 5 pm or 9 am – 7 pm (typically closed 1 day/week e.g. Sunday), which little if not zero investment in consumer technology and process improvement. The competitors’ setup would generally be shops in mall or community centers, employing at least 1 staff in a typical 8-15 sq. m. shop house/booth.
Comparing this to WashBox24, the company believes there is a gap in the everyday-use/laundry-led market with a low cost locker setup that is space-flexible and more suitable to the modern lifestyle. Currently, WashBox24 is the 1st and only e-locker-based laundry service in Asia Pacific. In addition, being the first mover in this technology, the company has built a network of smart lockers for not only the laundry service, but also the eCommerce and logistic services that can utilize the same locker and tech infrastructure to solve the inconvenience and transparency issues for our customers as well, hence promoting cross-selling and being a one-stop service for daily life.
A regional operation with a focus on the biggest SEA cities
Box24 operates a business model with key competitive advantages being the patented technology of its home-grown smart lockers and software solutions. The company offers its branded product/services, sets its own price, create payment solution, and e-Wallet system, but outsourced the back-end to respective partners e.g. hotels, laundry factories, bag and shoes cleaners, etc. In effect, they are acting as a platform that interacts directly with the end-consumer, whilst welcoming third party operators to be part of it. This inclusive tech development has allowed Box24 to scale to 3 countries namely Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia and they’re seeking more master licensees in major cities in Asia Pacific.
Box24’s partners are service providers in each of the vertical they are operating in i.e. WashBox24- laundry and dry cleaning service would be partnered hotels and laundry factories, MoveBox24- parcel delivery service would be DHL, Kerry Express, SCG Yamato Express, Thailand Post, ShopBox24- grocery retailers would be Big C and CP Fresh Mart, DropBox24- personal storage service would be SST and Suntec City.
The company’s goal is to build the platform by expanding the locker network, whilst offering a branded experience together with partners.
Communication is a key success factor
Box24 typically acquires customers in two ways i.e. online and offline depending on the consumer journey. In the case of lockers, offline is more effective as lockers are normally placed in easily accessible areas e.g. condominium lobby, entrance or exit of the buildings, etc. In the case of home delivery, online e.g. Google Adwords, Google My Business, and Facebook Ad Campaign would be more effective. Instead of solely relying on deals and discount, the strategy is to run the online campaign with creative contents that would be more appealing hence creating relevancy and brand preference.
